Ray H.

I am trying to re-install MS Office after overwriting my
Win2K OS. I get the messages: "Setup has detected an
installation from an earlier version. Do you want to
update?" followed by: "The system administrator has set
policies to prevent this installation."

I am the administrator! (This is a home system.)

I've tried to use "Add/Remove Programs", but Office does
not appear as an option. I've deleted all mention of
Office from the registry. Still, the same messages

Is this a security issue?

If you can offer suggestions, please eMail me directly as
well as posting to the board.

Thank you.

Hi Ray. Double check that you are actually logged on as an administrator. If you can
change your tcp/ip properties, then you are logged on as an administrator. You may
also want to look into your Local Group Policy via gpedit.msc. For both computer and
user configuration look in administrative templates/Windows components/Windows
Installer. By default every setting at both places should be undefined. If they are
not I suggest you change them to undefined. I would enable always install with
elevates privileges if nothing else helps. That is not something I would recommend
however to anyone who does not want regular users to install .msi packages on their
computer, but in your case it might get you going. --- Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the suggestions.

I am listed as having administrators privledges. However,
I logged on as "Administrator" to be sure.

Listings in "administrative templates/Windows
components/Windows Installer" say "not configured" instead
of "undefined". Does this need to be modified?

I enabled "always install with elevates privileges". I
restarted my computer, and the same error messages
appear. Dead end!

What about eliminating any record of Office having been
installed in the past? I can't find it mentioned
in "add/remove programs", or in "Search", and I even
removed all files called "Office" from the registry.
Where is this thing getting the notice that I'm trying to
replace a peviously installed program?

Sincerely,

Ray
