Brian

I have a printer that I used to be able to print to whenthere was a
Win XP machine there. I recently put a new Win2000 machine there.
Since then I have not been able to print to the printer. The rest of
the computers in the network are Win XP. Other computers can see the
2000 machine and they can even share files across the network.
Somehow, they will not print to the printer.

If anyone has any ideas, that would be great.
If you have a website where I can read whata to do, I will go there as
well.

Thanks,
Brian

Quite possibly, on the Windows 2000 computer, you have installed a driver
that is not Windows XP compliant.

Here's something to check:

1. logon at one of the Windows XP computers
2. click Start, Run, key "\\" followed by the name of the Windows 2000
computer (e.g. \\w2kname) and press Enter
3. in the Windows Explorer window that opens, double click Printers and
Faxes in the right pane.
you are now looking at the printers folder from the Windows 2000 computer.
4. Click File, Server Properties and select the Drivers tab
5. locate the driver for the printer you are concerned about and see what it
says under the "Version" column

If it says "Windows NT 4.0 or 2000", you have what is called a "Version 2"
driver and it is not suitable for Windows XP clients. Many "Windows 2000"
printer drivers are implemented using the "Version 2" printer driver model,
although the "Version 3" printer driver model was introduced with Windows
2000.

Go to the printer manufacturer's web site and download the Windows XP
("Version 3") driver and install that on your Windows 2000 computer.
Windows 2000 supports both the "Version 2" and "Version 3" printer driver
models, but Windows XP doesn't, or at least, most "Version 2" drivers don't
work correctly on Windows XP.

Please note that printer drivers can be very idiosyncratic, so if you still
need more assistance, please state what make and model of printer you are
having this difficulty with.
