This problem started out as extremely slow printing. It could take 10
minutes before the document begun being sent to the printer and then it could
take another 10 minutes for the printer to spit it out. Now it won't print
at all. The queue will list the status as 'Printing' but it never spools
beyond 72 bytes. It will hang there for about 2.5 minutes and then the doc
will disappear out of the queue. It never gives an error.
First thought was to check up on disk space and memory. I'm good all
around. I have about 3.5 gigs avail on the partition the OS is on. Memory
hovers just below to just above the amount of physical memory and the swap
handles everthing else just fine. It doesn't eat up an excessive amount of
processor time and the peak memory use of the spooler is acceptable.
Next thought was to replace the driver. I headed over to hp.com and got the
latest and greatest. I tried to install it but it is a no go. It tells me
that it can't install the driver because there is not enough disk space.
Read above and you'll see that isn't a problem. I can create a new printer
using the existing driver and that will create just fine. I just can't use
the new driver. I tried replacing the driver in the existing printer setup
but I get a similar result.
I installed a generic text driver and this works just fine.
I'm not sure exactly when this problem started but it may have followed a
recent Windows Update. I don't know how to tell what the recently installed
updates are. I can't use the Windows Update through IE-and therefore I can't
use it's log. I'm told it is for Admin only even though I'm logged in as
Administrator. I would like to roll back an update or two and see if this
problem goes away.
I'll also take any other ideas that will let me keep the updates. Plese
help before my wife throws me and the computer out the door.
