Can't ping

I can't get my desktop to respond to a ping request (from
inside my network). I have disabled McAfee firewall, and
the XP firewall is also disabled. I've even hooked up my
laptop straight into the back of my desktop using a
crossover cable and put them both on static addresses.
still nothing. The desktop can ping itself, and it can
ping the laptop, but never from my laptop to my desktop.
Also, my desktop can see my laptop in the workgroup, but
not vice-verse. Any suggestions?
