Probably a trivial problem but I can't track it down.

host acesses web OK. pings IP's and www.web names OK
client pings 127.0.0.1 OK
client pings 192.168.0.1 OK
but client can't ping web IP's or web names

windows xp network set up for ICS OK

host dial up set up:
obtain IP automatically
obtain DNS automatically

host lan set up:
IP 192.168.0.1
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway blank
use the following DNS server blank

client LAN set up as :
IP 192.168.0.172
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1

preferred DNS server 192.168.0.1

other clients set up similarly

The network has been working OK for a long time but suddenly I get this
problem.

I am not running ICF but am running zonealarm,
but the problem predates zonealarm installation.

Would it be a service not running on the host?
if so which one?
I switched on (using services.msc) Remote Access, RIP, RPC locator as the
most likely sounding ones,
but it didn't help

Any help appreciated
Regards
Anthony

It could be that the web sites you were trying to ping have ping disabled
and so don't respond to pings.

the problem is with your host machine 192.168.0.1 because
you have no default gateway defined nor an external DNS
server.

it seems to me the traffic stop on the ics host. use tracert command to
confirm that. also you may want to stop all firewall for the test.

Ok thanks for the pointer.
On the host LA network bridge
I set DNS server to 127.0.0.1 is that right?
should I set default gateway also to 192.168.0.1 (it wouldn't let me set
127.0.0.1)
In any case it didn't make it work.
Is there a good web site that explains what to do?
I found a good one when I first set up the network, but can't find it again.

On the host's dialup adapter DNS server is set to obtain automatically
Likewise IP is found automatically.

using ipconfig /all I see the actual DNS servers are 195.92.195.94 and
192.92.195.95

From memory I seem to think there is some file you edit to ban some web
names, maybe that got lost or damaged?
OK I found it it's hosts in windows/I386
the only entries in there are:
127.0.0.1 localhost
I seem to remember putting some entries in there to ban some web sites but
can't remember how to do it now.
the same file exists on the clients too.

Anthony

OK found it now, it's in windows/system32/drivers/etc file hosts.
theres a whole load of banned ad sites there with 127.0.0.1 IP ref.

here's a small selection:
127.0.0.1 123banners.com
127.0.0.1 ad.adsmart.net
127.0.0.1 ad.ca.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.de.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.es.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.fr.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.free6.com
127.0.0.1 ad.it.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.iwin.com
127.0.0.1 ad.jp.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.kr.doubleclick.net

it seems to be still intact.

Anthony, I have the exact same problem. It started one
week ago. I had torn down my system and rewired it up in
a new room. Ever since my two clients cannot ping the
internet but my host can.

Have you found the problem yet?

Thanks.

No I'm still in the dark,

Did you try ipconfig /all from the command prompt? from the client.
what are your TC/IP settings for the lan and the dial up connection?
are they the same as or similar to mine?

I assumed my problem was due to a virus or bad program installation.
as it happened suddenly and for no apparent reason.
Maybe a service had stopped running but I checked what I thought
were the most likely ones using services.msc from the command prompt.
I tried rerunning ICS install wizard with no avail.
I can't even run system restore as for some reason that fails.
Maybe because there was not a huge ammount of space
on the hard drive for system restore points.
Any pointers greatfully received.

I'm thinking to instal the dial up connection on the client instead,
and make it the host and see if that helps.

Regards
Anthony
