cant ping by host name

ie 6 not working. can ping Google by IP address but
cannot ping www.google.com. Have removed Norton a/v and
pest patrol - no help. Outlook express no longer works
either. Using cable modem. Have re-installed ie 6. Have
refreshed install of Win98 se. Have removed & re-
installed the ms client, the NIC and TCPIP several times.
All was working before system problem occured. any help
appreciated

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.
