Guys and Gals,
When I attempt to begin an outline in Word by either
typing a number or clicking on the icon in the upper right
toolbar, everything is great. However, when I attempt to
move to the next sublevel of the outline, say "a." the
number 2 shows up and even when I tab over, it will not
display the "a." I desire in the outline form. It looks
like this:

1.
2.

When I want it to look like this
1.
[TAB] a.

Any ideas as to how I can fix this? Thanks. Mike

Mike,
Go to Format > Bullets and Numbering. Select the Outline Numbered tab.
Look for a thumbnail that matches the format you require -- if nothing
suitable is available, select any of the thumbnails (except "None") and then
press the Customize... button. This will open the Customize Outline
Numbered List dialog.

From this window, you can set up numbering as you require. For example:
** Select Level 1.
** Select "1, 2, 3, ..." as the Number style.
** Append a period to the default number in Number format "1".
** Set Aligned at to "0" (cm or in).
** Set other parameters as required.

Now:

** Select Level 2.
** Select "a, b, c, ..." as the Number style.
** Append a period to the default number in Number format "a".
** Set Aligned at to (say) "2" cm or "0.5 in" or as required.
** Set other parameters as required.

Click OK.

In your document, click the Numbering button on the toolbar at the start of
a paragraph. This should display "1.[TAB]". Enter text, then press enter.
The new paragraph should default to "2.[TAB]". Press the TAB key at the
start of this paragraph. This should indent the new paragraph and change
the number format to "a.[TAB]".

I hope this is not too much information, but I wasn't sure exactly where the
problem was. If you are already doing all of this, then I don't know what
the problem is (this works for me).

Regards,
Lyn.
