Can't Oper Certain Web Pages

There are certain Web pages that I have always been able to access
that I can't access anymore in either Internet Explorer or Netscape.
All my browser settings are correct. I've been consulting with
technical support at my ISP about this for a few weeks, and we've
tried everything we can think of to resolve this. I've finally decided
that the problem must have something to do with Norton Antivirus
because I have the same problem with the same sites in two different
browsers.

I use Norton Antivirus 2002, and Symantec won't support that version
by email anymore. So I've been searching their Web site for an article
on this and can only find what sounds like my problem with Norton
Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall, neither of which I
have.

I never had a problem with Antivirus until I uninstalled version 2002
and installed version 2004. the new version kept giving me problems
during installation, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled 2002. I did a
Live Update of 2002 and downloaded and installed all the updates they
had available, not just the definitions.

Since then, I've been unable to log on at
www.shellmc.accountonline.com or www.fidelity.com (although I am able
to open the fidelity.com home page and some of its other pages. I
don't understand it because I've always been able to log on to
fidelity.com before. I can log on to FAMfunds.com and
americanexpress.com and amazon.com and wellsfargo.com, etc.

Those two Web pages that I can't log on to, I can log on with my
husband's computer, and all our browser settings are the same.

I'm sure after all this time that I've been trying to figure out this
problem that this has something to do with Antivirus. But I disable
autoprotect, and that makes no difference. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Beth

Maybe a problem with the HOSTS file having incorrect entries?

Have you followed the Symantec instructions for removing *all* NAV entries
from the registry of your machine, *before* trying to reinstall another
AV? Print the Symantec instructions for removal of registry entries,
uninstall your NAV product, clean the registry and then reinstall afresh
whichever AV you decide to use.

Hoprefully that should fix your problem - *if* it is related to your AV ;o)

I looked up that Web site, and that is really interesting. I checked
in my C:\Windows directory, and I have a hosts.sam file. I didn't open
it. I know that the Web site says that hosts will not have an
extension, but this has .sam.

Do you think I could find the problem in hosts.sam? What should I look
for?

I did have those instructions then chickened out. I hate to fool
around with the registry because I could make things worse instead of
better. But I know you're right; that could be what's causing my
problem.

I just opened my hosts.sam file. Here's what it says:

# Copyright (c) 1998 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP stack for
Windows98
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host
name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Doesn't look like there are incorrect entries, does it?

Quoth the raven named Elizabeth:
I just opened my hosts.sam file. Here's what it says:
....

The .sam stands for "sample". The HOSTS file the browsers use would
be in that same directory, but with no file extension.

See Section 3 of this page of mine.
http://bshagnasty.home.att.net/browsersettings.htm

If you want to, copy my sample
into a new file on your computer. Use a text editor only such as
Notepad. When saving, enclose "hosts" in quotes, so Notepad doesn't
append an extension.

...and surf with most of the annoying banner ads gone. As you find
additional new ad servers, add them to the file.

This is an inactive sample of what a 'hosts' file looks like.
The .sam is for sample I think.

Nothing in there will help you much, it is an example of a 'hosts'
file ~ consider it to be documentation, and not a system file.
The *real* hosts files has no extension (no 'dot' anything).

The [.sam] is just a sample file to show how the hosts file is
configured. If you don't have a hosts file for some reason you can
create one with notepad, just a blank text saved as hosts and renamed to
remove the extension.

There is a cooperative effort to amalgamate additions/removals of these Web
sites for the HOSTS file. I would welcome your efforts with this endeavor
as these sites pop up and disappear faster than cockroaches multiply and
expire. The current hpguru's HOSTS file follows this methodology. The two
methods of communicating additions and deletions are on the HOSTBOARD forum
or the Yahoo Groups forum.
We watch the great efforts of the author of IE-SPYAD.
