can't open word

this just started today -- each time i try to open a word file i get an error message. i tried deleting the normal file, downloading a patch from symantec, etc. nothing happens. i can only open the document in notepad

Stick the WORD CD in the drive and open it. Try a "repair" install (or
similar name - to fix missing or corrupted files.

What error message are you getting? What do you mean that nothing happens when
you try to delete the normal file? Does the file delete? What about the patch
from symantec? Why do you need an AV patch for Word?

Does this happen with all files or just one?
