Can't Open Web Page

This is really strange, I hope someone can help. I have no problems surfing
the net and opening any web pages EXCEPT anything associated with AARP. This
has not been a problem in the past, in fact I regularly receive several
newsletters, etc. from AARP and can usually click on a link to get further
information and such. About a week ago I started getting the "This page
cannot be displayed" error message whenever I try to open an AARP web page.
So far I have pinged at my end (all is ok), deleted temp files and history,
and scaled the web address down to its basic form of www.aarp.org, all to no
avail. I can access the web page when on my work computer just fine, I just
have the problem at home on both my main PC and my remote laptop. Any ideas?
Thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem but with a completely different site. For
me, it appears as though the webpage is going to load, the frame of the page
appears, but then just stops. My home PC is the only place I'm having this
problem and it's only one web page. I can load the page at work and on my
laptop just fine. What gives?

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

I had a problem in the past with my hosts file and was able to fix it.
Unfortunately, this time around it doesn't seem to be the hosts file for me.
The page actually starts to load, I can see the frame of it, and then IE just
hangs and won't go any further. I've deleted cookies, temp files, checked
security settings, pop-up blocker... everything. I can't seem to figure it
out.

I am having the same problem since downloading SP2 on all 4 of our computers.
Clicking on links will start to open a new window and then it flashes back.
Sometimes hitting the Control key quickly will open it, other times it will
not, other times it will take me to my home page. It WILL NOT open a NEW
browser window through... no matter what I can not have more than one browser
window open at a time.

HELP as this is affecting my employees being able to do their work
efficiently and they are so frustrated!

Sandra - That sounds to me like the new pop-up blocker that is now part of
your IE tools with service pack 2. Holding down CTRL and then clicking on
the link is supposed to prevent pop-up blocker from acting on whatever it is
you're clicking on, so either try shutting off the pop-up blocker or holding
down CTRL when you click on a link.

Hi,
Is the internet connection at home broadband (cable or DSL) or dialup?
Which OS on the two home computers?

Hi:
I just wanted to share that I am in the same situation (can't open web page
or "page cannot be displayed" or blank page saying done but nothing on the
page...).
I tried pretty much everything that was advised, i.e. AdAware, SpyBot,
LSPFIX, and renaming HOSTS to OLDHOSTS. It still does not work.
The couple of Web pages I cannot access include MSN (Hotmail).
Any more advice???
Thank you. Francoise

Hi:
Well, I kept looking into it and I found the answer in the solutions offered
for the "blank window" problem. I fixed it by going to Start/Run and enter
"regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll".
I am sooooooo happy!

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

I found the HOSTS file and when I opened it, it was empty. I tried to rename
it but was not allowed.

Used Option 2 with success, thanks so much!

Used Frank Saunders' suggestion about "regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll" and that
seemed to do the trick, thanks so much for your help!

I GIVE UP! I've tried everything. I've fanangled settings, I've
removed/reinstalled java, antivirus software, I've cleared cookies, temp
files, I've chatted with reps from the site I can't load and I've chatted
with people from McAfee... all for nothing. The only thing I've been able to
narrow down is that if I disable McAfee then sometimes I CAN load the site,
but usually it takes hitting refresh numerous times before it will load.
There are no options in McAfee that will have the same effect, it must be
disabled completely. The people from the chat site say that it's a java
problem since the page will partially load but then just hang. I don't have
this problem using Fire Fox, so Microsoft can just bite it, I'll just use
something that actually works. It still annoys me that I can't work through
this problem, but what else can I do? Not even any of the suggestions below
helped... speaking of which I could not get that whole oleaut32.dll thing to
work with msconfig. It would only let me browse for .cab files so I couldn't
locate one with .dll

Thanks to all for your help and feedback, please feel free to suggest more
if you come up with something.

Be sure that you have flushed all of your caches, temp and dns. The help you
have been given is right on but here are a few more to try.

Just as a reminder http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281679/EN-US/

Switch your home page to about.blank and get the IP address of the desired
site not the URL.and try it.

Other possible fixes are http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

I had the exact same trouble with going to MSNBC and it seems this is a very
common problem with IE6. Although I seem to a
have resolved my problem I switched to Firefox and am real glad I did.

please feel free to suggest more if you come up with something.

Somebody might be able to "come up with something"
if you bothered to disclose the site giving you a problem
(assuming it is a public site.)

From your comments about using Refresh etc. it looks like
you have borderline connectivity with that site for some reason,
which the other browser seems to have greater tolerance.
Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any tuning parameters
for such cases (e.g. timeouts, filters, etc.) in IE. We work around
them on a case by case basis using whatever specific factors
each example involves.

You could start by using View Source on your "blank" page
and checking that some form of redirect (including use of frames)
is not involved.

Wow, there sure are a lot of negative attitudes on this site. I really do
appreciate all the suggestions I've read from everyone. I'm sorry Robert,
that you seem to have misunderstood my posts. Furthermore, I never bothered
to post the name of the website because no one asked and it seemed as though
people were having the same problem across the board with a variety of
websites. Many of which, by the way, were also not named in particular. It
is indeed a public chat site that I'm sure not many of you on here are going
to be familiar with as it's geared towards a particular community
(www.gay.com). It is a java based chat site and therein seems to lie the
problem. I'm not sure why disabling McAfee will at times allow me to load
the site, but my suggestion to everyone would be to give Firefox a try. It's
different, but works well!

Thanks to all,

Josh
