Can't open Twain Source when 2nd scanner is powered off (a solution)

If you have two scanners installed and receive the error "Can't open
Twain source", you might try turning on the other scanner.

I received this error with an Epson 4870 driver v2.34 under XP with all
the latest updates. Installing driver v2.65 did not resolve the
problem. Uninstalling and reinstalling the 4870 drivers and software
did not resolve the problem. Tried a couple different applications to
access the scanner. Finally, turned on my Brother MFC-8840DN
printer/copier/fax/scanner. Problem solved.

Epson Scan works fine even if the Brother MFC-8840DN is powered off (I
assume that this is because Epson Scan is not using Twain).

Interestingly, scanning using the Brother MFC-8840DN works OK even with
the Epson 4870 turned off.

What would happen if you did not have the Brother MFC-8840DN
printer/copier/fax/scanner?

Don't you think the there is a software conflict between the two installed
scanners.

The Epson Scanner is TWAIN, unless you plugged in the Epson and turned it on
before installing the Epson software. In which case, Windows XP installed a
WIA driver which would cause a TWAIN driver not found error. It that case,
you would have to remove the WIA driver to get the TWAIN to work.

Did you read what Epson have to say about the Epson Scan V2.65?
