can't open separate window

Hello,

I'm running IE6 on Win 2000, and I suddenly (today) am unable to access
a link if the link opens a new window. (Links that display the new site in
the same window work fine.) I forget what causes this, but I remember that
this was one of the symptoms of the msblast virus. (However, I searched
my C drive for "msblast" and didn't find it. Also, I'm not having any of
the other symptoms, such as frequent spontaneous reboots and other weird
things.)

Could someone please tell me what I need to do to make it possible for
my browswer to access links that open new windows to display them?

I have already rebooted, yes. :)

Thanks,

J. Wermont

Been a common question lately. Not sure if all the typical "fixes" have
worked for all cases.

Press and hold the Shift key while clicking the link.

Then there is the IE Options>advanced tab>browsing section>Un-check "re-use
windows to launch shortcuts> Apply>OK out.

Some have said this hasn't worked for them, but it *does* work for me. If
this is something new, and the above two suggestions do not work for you I'd
suggest checking for Spyware/Malware and see if that may be at the root of
it.

Thanks - this got it to open the separate window. But it should work
without having to use the shift key, so I'm still wondering what's wrong.

Glad that helps to a limited degree. Sure beats the R-Click process, but
something else is wrong. Does this happen with *all* web pages you visit?
FYI: Some web pages are coded in a way that doesn't permit opening in
separate new windows.

Anyway, I'd do a scan for pests. You do have Anti-Spyware programs
installed? See here:

"Check for Spyware" suggestions:
First, install the respective programs and then update them immediately, so
that they have the current versions, and definitions. Read the Help Files
and Tutorials. Run them one at a time. With Ad-Aware you may have it
generally clean whatever it finds. The same applies for CWShredder.
Spybot S&D requires special attention (listed below), as does HijackThis
(Only more so. Details listed below) The programs are listed in order of
their general strength, safety, efficacy, and purpose. It is perhaps best to
install and run these in this order of appearance. All are freeware
programs,
but if you are pleased with the results and quality of the utilities,
donations
to the respective Authors are cheerfully accepted.

This item below is designed to *prevent* installation of malware and the
like by comparing known CLSID's of these "bad guys" with what is in its
definitions. It doesn't remove anything, nor will it fix anything that is
already in your PC. Rather, it will prevent installation or re-installation
of the item once it has been removed either manually, or by the use of
another program which will perform the duty of removing the spyware.

If you use Spybot S & D, be sure to clean *ONLY* the items displayed in
*RED*. DO NOT clean any items displayed in Black or Green at this time.

Lastly there is HijackThis. Hijack this is a very powerful, last resort type
of program which is generally best used in conjunction with help from those
who deal with the findings of the log created by the HijackThis scan. It
does nothing in the scan itself; it merely says what is in and running on
your PC. The items must be checked-marked to be "cleaned". You must
know *exactly* what you are checking-off before you proceed.
If you don't, you can quite possibly disable many useful and vital functions
of your PC. Remember; read the Tutorials, and seek help at SpywareInfo
Forums, Net-Integration, or TomCoyote forums for safety's sake.

I can access links that don't open a new IE window without any trouble.

Also, I tried to reinstall IE6, thinking that would just be the easiest
way to get rid of the problem. So I went to this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx

From there, I clicked on various download links until I got here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-
48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en

From there I downloaded a file called "ie6setup.exe". Once that file was
on my desktop, I closed all programs, and tried to launch the exe. But it
gave me a message saying "A previous installation has pending work
requiring a reboot. You need to restart your computer to complete that
installation before running IE Setup. Setup will now close."

I'm not running any installation that I know of, but I was messing around
with configuration settings, so I rebooted just in case. In fact, I rebooted
a couple of times. But even after that, trying to launch the installer gives
me the same message.

Does this also sound like a spyware problem?

Thanks,

J Wermont

PS - I have no problems at all with Netscape. I'd just start using
Netscape instead, but it takes forever to load, as compared to IE.

This makes it sound like you have a program blocking pop-ups. Something like
Yahoo Companion or another toolbar or ad-blocker.

If not... work through these links:

First post first, though I am replying to your second query regarding this
matter. Yes, as I said earlier. there is a *chance* that a bug is chewing on
your machine... so to speak.

It cannot hurt to install and run the programs which I supplied links to. I
am surprised if you're not running them already, but it appears that you
aren't. That being the case, you are already at a disadvantage in the
world's largest fight arena; The *world wide web*. So, follow my previous
instructions before trying to repair or re-install IE. This will place you
on an more or less level playing field with the bad guys. Most persons
already run these programs for the reasons stated. They seem to work for
their respective points of focus. Don't get left behind and trod upon by
"malware merchants" and "spyware scum".

You'll probably find many things detected. Follow the instructions I
provided and the tutorials *to the letter*. We'll move on from there.

Best of luck....now get busy.

Good thought! I do have the Google toolbar, and I thought that might be
causing the problem. So I uninstalled the toolbar, and then rebooted,
but it didn't change anything.

Ironically, the Google toolbar doesn't prevent advertising popups from
continuing to be displayed. I also have FreeSurfer running, that doesn't
do anything either.

Yes sir! :) Thank you, you've given me lots of good places to look.

PS - one of the reasons I tend to ignore issues like virus protection is
that I do most of my internet stuff from a remote unix shell account. It's
very safe from viruses. So I tend not to be in the mindset of needing to
think about protecting my computer from invaders. But I do realize that
browsing the web is a different matter - and I'm not doing that remotely.
So thanks...

YW. ;-) Post back here if there are any new developments. Remember the
following:
Update all programs immediately after installation.

Spybot S&D, only have it fix (clean) that which is displayed in Red. Don't
have it fix anything else that is displayed as Black or Green at the moment.

Run them a couple of times each, to be sure. Running in "safe-mode" can also
aid their efficacy.

HijackThis - seek help at the sites I recommended for this. Read the
Tutorials for it as well. Powerful and *hazardous* program for your PC if
used capriciously.

OK then... best of luck.
