I'm having problems installing Yahoo IM. It says there's
a system error and to contact administrator. I believe my
problem is that regedit file won't open. Have fairly
recent install of Win2K. Would really appreciate some
help!!

Try 'regedt32.exe'. Does this one work?
Does 'regedit.exe' exist? Has it been removed?

Is there an administrator who might have disabled access?

Really appreciate your response! regedt32.exe works
fine. regedit.exe exists but won't open. I get error
message of "This operation has been cancelled due to
restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact
your system administrator."

This is a home computer networked to two other computers.
I'm running Norton Internet Security which includes Anti-
Virus. Wondering if these programs are causing any of the
problem. I tried to uninstall Norton, but didn't make any
difference.

Yahoo IM is trying to access regedit.exe to install the IM
program. Doesn't get access, so install stops.

Hi

This might be the work of the Swen worm or something similar
(it could be from some spyware or parasite as well).

To try to solve your problem, do the following:

Copy and paste the URL address lines into your IE address bar:

http://www.dougknox.com

In the menu, select Security, Disable/Enable Registry Editing Tools.

This small VB Script will remove this restriction. If the first time the
script is run it says "Disabled", run it again to enable registry edits again.

To try to find what has caused this:

Run a cleanup tool, e.g. Stinger.exe from McAfee, it removes 30+
virus/worms in one sweep.

McAfee AVERT Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Be sure to run an updated Antivirus program at all times.

For the Spyware and Parasites part, you will need to run other tools:

The Parasite Fight Quick Fix Protocol

Tried all of these things and still can't open regedit.
Stinger.exe found 2 files that it deleted. FYI, I have
Spybot - Search & Destroy and Spywareblaster installed on
my computer. Where do I go now?
Thanks. GW

Correct me, somebody, if I'm wrong:

If I remember right, there's a group policy setting (start
GroupPolicyEditor and look for it) which says something like:
disallow registry editing.

If you are able to run regedt32, it's probably not this one.
Nevertheless it might be worth checking.

Where do I look for the GroupPolicyEditor?
Thanks!
GW

PS I won't have access to my computer from 7/27 until
7/31. Will check back for response at that time.

Try

mmc c:\winnt\system32\gpedit.msc

from a console or from Start->Run...

Bernhard
.
Found Group Policy folder in winnt\system32...No editor
file found. Couldn't open any files in folder.
