Can't open my .mdb

I was experimenting with opening an access database in IIS. For
experimenting, I have an .mdb called HasbaraSample. In this case I copied it
to the C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Access folder.

I had various problems trying to get it to open in IIS. I went to asp.net
forums and was told to right_click the app_data folder and click the security
tab.

To make a long story short, that never worked out.

Now to my great horror, when I try to open any of the dozen or so
HasbaraSample.mdb's on my computer, I get a login box with the username
dennist685 on it with a blank password. Nowhere have I defined a password,
except for sqlserver 2005, mixed authetification.

I tried no password and got the message, 'not a valid account name or
password'. I tried my password for sqlserver, got the same message. Tried,
Admin, Administrator, etc. all giving me the same message.

I am really stuck now. I've got to open these other HasbaraSample.mdb's.
Never in my wildest imagination did I consider playing with an App_Data
security tab end up disabling all the far flung HasbaraSamples on my
computer. I don't know how the security settings could possibly have
proliferated.

I had no security settings before. My intention was just to design my
database in Access, then upsize it to sqlserver.

Can anybody help me? This is urgent.

Steve?

You have inadvertently joined a workgroup security file for which the
Admin user has a password. Solution is to
1) re-join the default workgroup file, or
2) create a new default workgroupfile for which Admin does not have a
password.

The exact steps vary depending on the version of Access you are using,
but they all involve using the workgroup administrator process. In
A2003, it is accessible via Tools > Security > Workgroup
Administrator. The default workgroup file is named System.MDW. It's
location varies, but you should be able to find it with Windows
Explorer.

Use the workgroup administrator to "join" the default workgroup.

If you are already joined to the default, then rename it to something
like system.mdw.hide and then run Access. It should create a new,
unsecured workgroup file.

See the website in my signature for additional information.

Thanks folks,

I opened access, went to tools -> security -> workgroup administrator

and got the message
WorkGroup Administrator: Dennis Turner
Company: MyCompany
Workgroup: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Access\Security.mdw

Now this doesn't exactly fit the senario above, so what's my next step. I'm
a little dense here. As I told Steve, I've been in the hospital a few days,
and am still on powerful narcotics against the pain.

Click the 'join' button and join your default workgroup. On this
computer, it is C:\WINDOWS\system32\system.mdw, but yours may vary.

As before, see the website in my signature for additional information.

Jackson,

Thank you very much. It worked fine. Steve, also thank you for your
continual help.

That still leaves me with the problem of persuading an access database to
run under IIS. First I'll try with Steve's sample application. If I have
further problems I'll address those in the asp.net forums.

I'll also study Jackson's website. There seems to be a lot of information
there that I need to know.

I remain in a quandry as to why I get more answers and feedback in the 2003
asp.net forums than the asp.net forums in the vs 2005 section.

Hi Denis,

Thanks for your prompt update.

Please perform the steps below and let me know the result

1. Modify C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Access\Security.mdw to security.bak

2. Open Access alone

3. Click Tools -> Security -> Workgroup Administrator

4. If there is a prompted dialog suggests using the default workgroup file,
click OK
(The default path should be C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows
LoginID>\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\System.mdw, please make sure you
have replaced <Windows LoginID> with your current windows login name )

5. If not, please let me know the path listed in the Dialog. And click
Join, type the path to be C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows
LoginID>\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\System.mdw, make sure you have
replaced <Windows LoginID> with your current windows login name

Thank you for your patience and cooperation. If you have any questions or
concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. We are always here to be of
assistance!

Steve, Here are the results

1.Done

2.Done

3.Done

4.No Dialog

5. The workgroup path is given as C:\Documents and
Settings\dennist685\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\System1.mdw

The name of the Workgroup Administrator is Dennis Turner. This is my name
on both my msdn subscription and on Windows XP. However the only user name
when windows boots up is dennist685, which is my user name in all forums, all
email accounts and everywhere else.

So before I go farther, given the above information, do you wish to modify
your suggestions above? I don't want to make a mistake.

Michael,
Can you please investigate why an MVP (Jeff Conrad in this case) should feel
immune to freely posting the cracking of Microsoft Access Security?

Is this a new Microsoft policy, tolerance, or what?

Chris

Hi Dennis,

I have noticed you have resolved by MVP Jack's solution, can you open your
mdb file now? If you could, I think it is not necessary for you to take the
my suggestions again.
