Hi All...

Recently, I've been trying to install a couple of programs on my W2K Pro
machine, but the installations have failed with a "Cannot Open The Device or
File Specified" error. The file in each case is a .msi file.
I've tried installing from the CD and by copying the files to the hard disk
and installing from there, but no luck.
I'm thinking this may be a glitch in the windows installer, but how can I
tell and how might I fix the problem?

Thanks for any advice!

Amanda

Hi AJ,

You can get this behavior for several reasons. Here is a link to an article
that talks about this in relation to Office programs, but it still applies
to other MSI files too:

324906 Cannot Start an Office Program After You Install Service Pack 3 (SP3)

Thanks for the ideas Tim, but none of them seem to work!>

Here is the error message I'm getting:

"The system cannot open the device or file specified"

Then, after giving up and clicking the cancel button...

"Internal Error 2755. 110, C:\NortonPF\NPF\NPF.MSI.

This happens whether I try to install from CD or copy the files to the hard
disk (as above). It isn't just this particular installation either... I
can't install a Logitech camera driver or make changes to my Office 2000
installation.
I can click on, and run, the .MSI file... that starts the installation
program, which then gives me the "The system cannot......" error again.
I have all the Microsoft "recommended and critical" updates installed. I'm
just at a loss to figure out what is happening here.
