Can't open contact - message box opens then closes immediately

Very recently (within a week or so) I have developed a problem opening
Windows contacts. Previously, I could open a contact and edit it with no
problem, simply by selecting it and 2-clicking. Suddenly, now when I 2-click
a contact, a dialog window opens then closes immediately; any message, if one
is even present, is not visible. Right-click and open does the same thing of
course.

I do not see anything unusual in the application event log.

Any ideas?

This problem seems related to the July 10 Windows Update KB933928.
Some people have obtained relief by uninstalling KB933928.
If all else fails, try upgrading to Windows Live Mail.

Thanks Gary, uninstalling this update seems to have fixed the problem. It's
disturbing that an update entitled "update to improve the Windows Vista
activation and validation process" would have a side effect of disabling my
ability to open contacts. Doesn't MS test this stuff?

I'm sure MS tests these updates in-house, but there is no way they
can test all the different combinations of hardware and software
that are out there in the real world.

Windows Update has several options, including download only
(don't install automatically), and notify only.

Blocking updates is OK as a short term fix, but in the long run,
it is not wise. This is why I suggest you consider the alternative
of upgrading to Windows Live Mail.
