When i start my P.c it tells me several "files cannot be
found (or one of its components) Make sure the path and
file name are correct and that the required libraries are
available"

Now only about 10% of my short cuts work and none of the
normal applications like Excel, word etc will open from
the start up menu. I get a message "Cannot find the
file '(null)' (or one of its components) manke sure the
path etc etc.."

However, if i go into "documents" and open a recently used
spreadsheet or word document then the application opens
without any problem, and i can go into any other document
within that application........What have i changed? lost?
messed up? and more importantly, how do i get it back?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Maybe you have RAM that is degrading and scrambling the
data that goes into and out of memory. If you have a way
of doing memory diagnostics, maybe you should check it.
Here's a free utility from MS:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Normally, I run CHKDSK first, but if RAM is the problem,
and the following uses your RAM significantly, then your
hard drive data will get toasted. BTDT. So check the
memory first.

I would run CHKDSK /R from the cmd prompt:
Start button, Run, cmd, push Enter. At the DOS window
type cmd and push enter. It will complain the drive is
locked or something. Then it will ask if you'd like it to
run the next time you boot. Answer "Y" and reboot. It
could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to
run.
CHKDSK won't check the area of the hard drive reserved
for the pagefile (virtual memory). So before you run it,
right-click the "My computer" icon, go to Properties,
Advanced tab, Performance Options, "Change..." button,
and turn the minimum pagefile size down to 32MB. After
running CHKDSK, go back in and set it back to something a
little higher than the amount recommended on
the "Change..." page.

If that doesn't do it, try a repair install of Windows.
To do that you'd need to boot off the Windows CD and then
choose "R" for repair, and then eventually do the "Fast
Repair" option.

And lastly, it's possible that these two repairs will fix
a problem but not the damage. You may end up having to
reinstall applications anyway.
