I have a client whose Internet Explorer will not accept URLs unless the
http:// protocol is explicitly typed in the Address Bar or File->Open. For
example, I can type
http://www.microsoft.com
and it works fine; but if I type just
www.microsoft.com
it hangs for several minutes, Task Manager indicates "not responding" and I
have to cancel it. In most of my testing IE never comes back, although I
think once I waited long enough that I got an "access denied" or "file not
found" message. (I'm not sure and I don't want to interrupt the client's
work for too long to try to reproduce it.)
It looks to me like IE has forgotten that http is the default protocol.
I'll run a spyware check tonight, but I don't see any unusual apps in
Add/Remove and our systems are pretty well locked down so I don't think
there's any malware involved.
Does anyone know where the default protocol is set (probably somewhere in
the Registry)? Can anyone think of anything else I can check? Thanks in
advance for any suggestions.
