I have reinstalled networking on this laptop. It can see
other machines on the network, but errors out when trying
to obtain an IP address to browse the internet. Network
settings are default since I reinstalled networking and
drivers. Any other suggestions?

If you open a command prompt, can you type ipconfig

If you receive an error, be sure you have the TCP/IP
Protocol installed.

Yes, I've tried to ipconfig /renew and it gives the error
that the adapter cannot grab an IP address.

The TCP/IP protocol is properly installed as well.
That's what makes it hard to figure out why things look
okay but doesn't work.

What's your Internet connection? Are you on an active directory domain?

John,
When you type ipconfig what does it show for an IP
address, subnet mask and default gateway? If your NIC is
working properly there should be some addresses there.
Windows does automatic IP addressing so an address gets
assigned to the adapter even if it doesn't find DHCP
server. What does your TCP/IP properties say about your
IP addressing and DNS addressing?
