My XP machine can ping the (Linksys) router and can also
ping the other computer (Win98 SE) on my home LAN, but I
can't ping in the reverse direction, i.e., the XP machine
does not respond to pings from my Win98 SE machine.

Internet Connection Firewall is disabled on the XP
machine. The two computers are in the "HOME" workgroup,
and have different names. Both machines are setup as DHCP
clients, and they receive distinct IP addresses from the
router. Both machines can browse the Internet.

Could there be a hardware problem with my XP machine? The
vendor (eMachines) says that it must be a configuration
problem (which means that they don't have to provide
support), but there doesn't seem to be anything else in
the way of configuration options.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Phillip

In all ping attempts, I've been using the numerical IP
address.

I have temporarily disabled all firewall software, and I
don't have any VPN software running.

Thanks!

Since both machines can browse the Internet, there can't be a hardware
problem on the XP machine.

You can enable or disable XP's Internet Connection Firewall
independently on each network connection. Double check that you've
disabled it on the LAN connection.

Are there any other firewall programs (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet
Security, Sygate Personal Firewall, etc) installed on the XP machine?
If so, un-install them while troubleshooting. If you've previously
un-installed one, re-install it, un-install it, and go to Start | Run
| Msconfig | Startup and disable any remnants of it.

Don't just disable firewall software. Un-install it.
