In the process of installing a Core Media Player Update, my computer hung.I
had no choice but to manually 'jump-restart' the system by hitting the retart
button, since the start - turn off computer - restart function was not
responding. After the computer restarted, I couldn't log back into windows (I
use windows XP Service pack 2), because when the password prompt appears and
I try to type in my password, the characters don't appear on the screen.I
tried changing my keyboard and mouse, hoping it might be the keyboard that
wasn't working, but I can't install any software since, presumably, I'm not
logged in.What is the solution to this problem?

Boot the system, start tapping F8 until the menu appears, at the menu,
select "Last Known Good Configuration" and press enter. If that fails to
resolve it, try entering Safe Mode as Administrator, follow the instructions
above but select Safe Mode. The user account called Administrator should be
listed at Safe Mode, this is generally a hidden account as opposed to the
user accounts you create and most users have never created a password for it
either. If that is the case for you, use the Administrator account, leave
the password blank and press enter.

Once in Safe Mode, you should be offered the option to go to System Restore,
do so and try taking your system back to a time prior to when this began.
