Hi,
I have a brand new computer running Vista Home Premium. I have a wired
Ethernet network w/ a Linksys Router that says is totally compatible - no
drivers nec. When I boot the machine, it cannot see the Internet (says
"Unidentified Network"). When I use the Diagnose and Repair it works most of
the time but sometimes I have to reset the network adapter or refetch the IP
settings. Just as much of a challenge to view other machines on the network.
Once it can see everyone it is fine until I reboot. I even cleared the Power
settings for the adapter as was recommended by some of the MS docs. Any
insight would be appreciated.

Not all routers are Visa ready unfortunately, see here

Thanks for your response, Roberto. The router did pass all the tests and
there is no new driver available for it. When it is up and running it seems
to work just fine. I put my system to "sleep" last night and when it
restarted the same thing happens. I have to reset the network adapter
(sometimes more than once) and refetch the local IP settings for it to see
the Internet and my other machines. I'm wondering if I could give it a static
address to try, but I'm not sure what to use.

You can assign any other IP that isn't already taken by one of your
other machines
EG if you router has an IP of 192.168.1.1 it would be safe to use
192.168.1.253 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
Do it through Local Area connection properties >IPV4.

Thanks - I'll try that. Have a family emergency so I won't be able to do it
until next week sometime.
