Hi,

I have an a7v600 with an amd 2600 cpu with 1-512 and 1-256 pc2700 mem
with 40 gig maxtor drive.
I try to load either windows xp or linux and it get to the point it
starts the load then I start getting errors about not being able to
write files and the installs fail. The location of the error and the
file is different from time to time depending on how many times I try
the load.
I have replaced the mobo with an a7v8x-x ... no difference. Replaced
the cpu ... no difference. replaced the hard drive .... no difference.
Replaced the memory ... no difference. I have tried to mix and match
different parts .... no difference. I did find a bad cdrom and took it
out. I also reburned the linux iso's that didn't make any differnece
either.
I am at my wits end with this. I have since put the a7v600 back in
with all new parts and still have the problem.
Has anyone even come close to this problem and found a way to fix it?
I've built machines before and never had this kind of problem. Right
now I am ready to chuck it all and buy an E-machine...........

Sounds to me like a Dell/E-Machine is your best bet..
On top of it there isnt anyone here who can give you any real guidance with
what you provided..
It's like me taking my Honda to the Toyota Dealer and saying that My ford is
running funny and asking them to fix it.

Is the ram compatible for these boards or is it just some no-name
generic stuff you just hoped might work? If generic I'd try raising the
ram latency/timings in the BIOS.

Have you run any memory diagnostics?

Is the PSU powerful enough?

it is most likely a ram problem - try removing one stick... then swap
if there is still a problem

With two sticks of ram, put them in slot 1 and slot 3, leaving
slot 2 blank. With one stick of ram, try it in slot 3, furthest
from the processor.

You could be using "stacked" ram, which puts too much load on the
memory bus. Memory like this is sold by unscrupulous vendors
(presumably so they can pocket a 15% restocking fee, when you
attempt to return the memory). If you are getting a bargain on
a memory, check the specs carefully for mention of x4 chips.

If memtest finds a problem, test the sticks one by one, to be
sure you are removing the defective one.

If, after you've sorted your memory issues, you are still having
problems, try underclocking the processor (i.e. reduce FSB).
This might help identify whether the problem is with the
processor end of things, or with the disk end of things.
Go from, say 166 to 133MHz.

HTH,
Paul

Generally when you have this problem, it is RAM that is causing it. Look to
your ram. If it is "el cheapo" generic Ram, there is a good chance you will
have this problem with any modern motherboard you put it in. If you have
built machines before, you will be well aware that your brand of RAM is
critical and so is which sockets you put it in.
