Can't load or read programs from CD or DVD

Help Please!

I have XP Pro.

The CD R/RW drive will read a game disk no problem, but when I try to
install a new program from the CD the system can't seem to read it - I
don't get any messages to this effect but the CD keeps buzzing (with the
red light on) and periodically the hard disk light comes on too. This
goes on until I reboot the computer - system shut down and other
functions are suspended while the computer repeatedly tries to read the
data from the drive.

This happens when I try and see the drive in Windows explorer or My
Computer too.

I thought the CD R/RW drive was on the way out, so I bought a new DVD
Read/Writer which I installed yesterday. Same problem. It will read a
film DVD although it doesn't play it - another request for help coming
later in respect of playing DVDs.

So game and data disks seem to be no problem, but a disk with a new
program on it can't be read. What might be the problem? Any assistance
gratefully received.

You might want to check and make sure the cable connecting to the drive is
connected snugly as well as the cable connecting to the motherboard. Did you
check and see if you have the latest drivers and/or firmware for your drive?
Also check your BIOS settings. As for the DVD not playing the movie you need
to have a DVD decoder installed such as PowerDVD. You should have gotten
some software bundled with the drive, check it out.

Michael,

Thanks for the reply.

I checked the cable was okay.

Yes I did get some software - but the computer won't read the disk -
hence the original question.

The funny thing is, it will read the Counterstrike disk - in fact both
my original CD drive and the new DVD drive will.

This is a real puzzle - game disks work but programs disks won't -
strange huh?
