Hi, I came on from work this morning to discover that the shared PC i am
currently using had crashed. I then duely rebooted but after 20 minutes
its still hadnt done anything. When the PC finally loaded windows up
there was no sign of the taskbar or any of my desktop items, i am able
yo open task manager and when i do i discove rthat explorer.exe is
using a massive 50% of the cpu (its not a slow system) i have tried
closing explorer and reopening but nothing, now and again it appears
but i cannot do anything.

I have tried safe mode and last known good config but its always the
same.

As an utter non techy can anyone help me? without using loads jargon
etc i wont understand??

You did a good thing, opening Task Manager and checking the % used.
You're right, Explorer should be at 0 once the system has booted.

I strongly suspect a virus. Try booting into Safe Mode(*) and running
a good virus disinfector.

(*) To get into Safe Mode, boot your computer and, as soon as the
boot starts, repeatedly tap F8 until you get a screen offering
various Windows choices. Pick Safe Mode. You'll need your
Administrator password; this is the built-in Administrator account,
not any administrator-level account you may have created. If you
don't recall setting a password for Administrator, try just hitting
the Enter key when prompted; many machines don't have a password for
Administrator (though they all should).
