even clicking on it directly.

TIA

Problems?

Content of any error pop ups?

Nothing happens?

Any entries in the Event Log corresponding to the times launching
config.sys failed?

If you run the System Information utility do the applications list under
"Startup Programs"? That list could indicate what is starting the
application (in the "Location" column). Does the "File Signature
Verification Utility" on the system Information "Tools" menu show any
problems with the MSCONFIG file?

Are you wanting to keep an application on the user account OR the
separate "All Users" "Start Menu|Programs|Startup" folder from running?
If so you can "explore" the start menu (right click the "Start" button)
and delete or move the shortcut.

SOME applications are generous enough to have a setting in their menu
system that turns the "launch on OS start" function on and off. IF the
application you want to keep from running has such a function,
identifying the application might allow someone to direct you to the
setting.

Sometimes third party anti-virus software launches Windows Messenger on
OS startup IF set to scan instant messages.

OS version including Service pack level? Include the FULL content of the
"Version" line listed under "System Summary" in that System
Information utility.

Please report back with more information or a success report if ANY of
the above helps.

As said by LEGG, you can find the replacement for msconfig from the following
link:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line No. 35 - Left Hand Side - Creates copies of REGEDIT, MSCONFIG and Task
Manager

But I think this is mostly caused by Malwares or Spywares. Also check if the
Task Manager and Folder Options are working fine. If they are too disabled
then you are system is surely infected. You need to scan your PC for spywares
and virus first.

http://technodigits.wordpress.com/2007/07/24/how-to-manually-remove-viruses-from-your-system/

From the above link, you can download to handy utilities, which may help you
to find and delete unwanted entries from Startup and mostly they are the
reason of infection. Yesterday, I had repaired a PC where a startup entry has
blocked www.yahoo.com only and more over every folder has an empty sub-folder
of the same name. There were to unauthorized entries in that PC - First one
was SVCHOST.EXE [not published by Microsoft] and second one is NEW FOLDER.EXE.

Hope this help, let us know!
