Chris Brighton

i am running a 200 server domain, with 65 XP pro SP1
clients. they were all purchased and put together at the
same time and from the same place.

one PC i am currently setting up finds the LAN (LAN
connection and speed shows up on startmenu by the time)
and it registars on the Hub (green light goes on for it)
however it wont ping the network (server or clients) and
it wont join the domain.

upon attempting to join the domain it says:-

'the domain controler for the domain ******** could not
be contacted.

Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly'

the domain is fine, the server is fine, the network is
working on all other PCs... i have changed the patch
cable, and it makes no difference.

this network must be set up soon so i need a quick
answer, any help is greatly appriciated

Thanks in advance

Chris Brighton

I would start by checking if you can ping the localhost (127.0.0.1) on the
pc that will not connect to the LAN. If this ping works then at least
TCP/IP is installed okay. This does not necessarily mean it is configured
correctly. Check that you have the right IP Address, Subnet and DNS
settings.

This certainly sounds like a cabling issue. I am assuming you are plugging
the pc into a wall mounted faceplate. Has this network point been active
before. Can you plug the patch cable into another just to test.

Can you ping anything else on the network?

I believe I am having the same issue as Chris. Let me
elaborate on the problem and hopefully Someone can get us
an answer. The cabling is okay on this machine because I
use the same network cable and connection all the time to
add computers to the network. When I type ipconfig it will
show a correct ip address that my DHCP server on a NT 4.0
network assigns to it so I know TCP is working correctly.
When I get the message Chris gets, I click on the details
button. A message states: The domain name ******* might be
a NetBIOS domain name. If this the case, verify that the
domain name is properly registered with WINS". Also get
the message that states: The Following error occurred when
DNS was queried for the service location(SRV) resource
record used to locate a domain controller for domain
******. How do I go about doing this?

Hi, just a thought but have you tried forcing the NIC to run at 10Mhz rather
than leaving the setting at Auto, I had a similar type of problem recently
and it was that the cabling would run at 10 but not properly at 100Mhz.
