Hi

I have a W2000AS with around 25 users. Recently I have not been able to add
new computers to our domain.

I believe that it is a problem with the DNS settings - the error given is to
the effect that the dns name doesn't exist, which of course suggests that
DNS is not working as it should be.

However, I am a bit out of my depth with this - I don't really understand
how to set up the server's DNS.

I added the DNS service recently because I read that it would speed up
logons, which are painfully slow in the company. It has not done this, and
added the problem I now have.

My previous post was based on the fact that I assumed it was the XP box
which would not connect, however I got this to join my home domain without
trouble, so I now know the failure is at the server end.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

regards,

NEIL

More specifically, I believe the problem is with my SRV record, which is
missing (perhaps) and thus means a new computer cannot find the domain.

Does this make sense?

Can anyone say how to solve it?

Cheers

Neil

Does your Domain Controller point to your internal DNS server that you setup
and only this DNS server? Ideally having DNS on the Domain Controller would
be best. Then you must setup forwarders on your DNS server to your ISP's
real DNS servers. All of your internal domain clients must point to this
internal DNS server for all DNS options. This way they use your intenal DNS
server for domain resources and logins and also for finding the internet.

Not on site currently, so not quite sure what you mean - in network
connections, my local area connection has an address, subnet mask, gateway
address and DNS entries from the ISP

Should these be different?
