I recently setup a win2k server in my office and i went through all of the
steps it told me to in order to use active directory, but when i try to join
a client to the domain i recieve the following error message:"A domain
controller for the domain sgwr.com could not be contacted. Ensure that the
domain name is typed correctly." Any idea's? my credability is on the line
so a quick response from anyone with an idea is requested. thank you!

DNS. Check your DNS setup. Win2X uses DNS for every thing.
What you want is an AD DNS Zone setup on your DC with it forwarding request
to your ISPs DNS. Then set ALL your clients to use Your DNS not the ISPs and
have all clients set to auto register with it.

the DNS on the server is not working correctly, i had already been told that
by the windows troubleshooter, but i do not know how to get it to work
correctly. it is like the server isnt associating itself with the domain.
after trying your suggestion, i still am at the same place.
HELP?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

There must be a primary DNS zone setup (usually on the DC itself) that
accepts dynamic updates. Point your DC at this DNS server. If you let the
wizard setup DNS, point the DNS at self. Once you are pointing at the
correct, internal DNS server and you've verified that that DNS server
accepts dynamic updates, restart the netlogon service. Once you've
restarted the netlogon service, ensure that all clients are pointing to the
internal DNS server.

In order for this registration to work, the DHCP client service *must* be
running and should also be set to auto start.

You cannot point to an external DNS server. Follow Yor's advice for how to
allow internal clients to resolve external names. If you let the dcpromo
wizard setup your DNS there may be a DNS zone '.'. You'll need to either
delete this zone or correctly setup a proxy server to resolve external
names.
