Can't Install

I have Windows XP which I purchased previously from Best
Buy, intending to install it on my old Windows98 machine.
I never did complete that installation. Now I am
attempting to Install it on an HP Laptop (with a k6
processor) that is currently running Windows 2000. When I
try to install XP from the CD, I get the message "Setup
cannot upgrade your current installation to Windows XP.
Your current installation is not a supported upgrade
path."

Is there some other version of XP I can download and
install? I already have paid for a license for XP, and it
has never been activated.

Not *ANOTHER* who can't read a box! It states quite clearly on the box your
XP Home came in what upgrade paths are supported.

95 (clean installation only)
98

If you wish to install the upgrade on your laptop you will need to

1) Format and install it clean
2) Have one of the above discs handy to prove upgrade eligibility.

If you don't, you cannot install it.

Erm Windows XP is commercial software. Do you really think MS would commit
commercial hari-kiri by making it available for download?!

You do not have a "paid for licence for XP" if you wish to upgrade 2000. If
you wish to upgrade from 2000 without formatting then you will need to
purchase a Pro upgrade. Windows 2000 is a 'professional' OS and XP Home is
considered a 'home' OS and, therefore, they're incompatible.

So, you have two choices

1) Install XP Home clean on your laptop (provided, of course, that you
have a qualifying product)

or

2) Purchase a Pro upgrade licence.
 
Hi Tim,

Win2000 can only be upgraded to WinXP Pro. I suspect you have the Home
version which can only upgrade Win98 or WinME. You could use it to do a
clean install on the laptop provided you have a qualifying media disk, but
there is no way to install it over Win2000.

Windows (any version) is not downloadable outside of an MSDN subscription.
Your license may be valid, but only for the upgrades previously mentioned.

Thanks for the info. Is there a way to tell if I can do a
clean install from the disk I have? I'd be happy if I
could just make a clean install on this laptop. ( Then
I'd have to figure out how to install various sound
drivers, ethernet drivers, etc., but ...)

I tried booting directly from the CD I have and it seemed
like it was going to do something. On the other hand, the
CD says "Upgrade" on it.
