installation goes fine untill it gets to the completing installation, then it
just restarts asif some pressed my reset button. it then boots up and comes
up with an error message saying that i need to restart installation because
it restarted, ive tried to install it a few times but without
success...anybody able to help?

Do you have any USB hardware connected - i.e, printer, modem, webcam? If so
try disconnecting these periperals and try installing again.

I have the same problem, yet I have no USB or IEEE1394 devices attached.
I haven't had this much trouble installing Windows since 95.

Same problem here. I created the iso DVD, formatted C for clean install,
booted from the DVD, and installed the OS. Then as it reboots as part of the
install process, the whole system hangs at the black screen with the "(C)
2006 Microsoft Corporation" After several tries, I left it running for 4
hours today. Nothing more ever happened.

I have no USB devices attached except for my Microsoft mouse and keyboard.
My system is a Dell XPS bought in March 2006. I passed the Vista
certification test with flying colors.

I can't imagine what my problem might be. My components couldn't be more
common...

Try using a serial mouse and keyboard. I had forgotten that my mouse was
USB, so I connected my old serial mouse and boom baby, no problems!

oh right, i have a USB fingerprint reader and wireless mouse, that could be
why then. i think i'll have a go at installing this later with a old ps/2
mouse. wonder why microsoft didnt sort this problem a long time a go. thanks
people. i shall report back on my finds later

I am trying to do an upgrade from XP Pro, but none of the suggestions are
working. I unplugged all USB devices, downloaded a clean ISO image using the
download manager and "Black Screen" for hours upon the first re-boot. So much
for getting a good report from the Vista Compatibility tool. I am done. I can
only take so much heartbreak.

ok this is getting really annoying now because i just got XP how i like it
then decided i was gunna try one more time to get Vista installed. it didnt
work. i tried without any USB devises plugged in. it gets to the same bit and
just restarts. after the restart the error message that comes up (as usual)
is "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error.
windows installation cannot proceed. to install windows, click "OK" to
restart the computer, and then restart the installation." anyone have anymore
ideas before i put XP back on??

I have the same problem as rharris, i tried a fresh install with a ps/2 mouse
and keyboard, as well as disconnected all other usb hardware. Id really like
some help here. Do you think it is a problem with my video card? 7950 gtx.
Id really hope not, I dont have another video card. Otherwise my system is
pretty ordinary. I noticed alot of people have this problem. Someone please
help me out!!

your computer restarted maybe because it was set to "restart when hangs"
I had the same problem a short time ago(but not restart).
but I have solved it already

Here are my suggestions
1.format your destination partition.
2.begin your installation not in the Windows but before it(use boot from
CD-ROM)
3.take away as many plugs on your mother board as possible(especially in the
PCIs)

but be careful. If you use a dual boot and begin the installation
immediately after the formating without going to XP even once , the partition
name in vista WOULD NOT MATCH THOSE IN XP. for exmple ,if my XP is in the C
patition and I install vista in E. The vista will call the partition where it
is installed Partition C and the original C and D would be D and E etc.
