cant install windows xp sp2 update

when I try to get sp2 from windows update it "checks for updates", then I get
a message that says" files required to use microsoft update are no longer
registered or installed on your computer' Then it tells me "to get latest
updates" & then It goes back to "checking for updates". Am I doing something
wrong?

Please try the correct group for your problem.
Once there do a search for SP2 -

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate
