can't install TCP/IP - any ideas?

Hi.

I recently had to go through my registry to remove some
keys that were directly connected to an adware service
called "new.net".
after that process, my TCP/IP protocol stopped
functioning. I could see network request coming in but
nothing goes out via my NIC. one suggesting was to remove
the NIC and reinstall it on a different pci slot, but it
is an on board nic. I tried using an external usb
ethernet, but it didn't help. so I finally decided to
remove TCP/IP and tried to reinstall it, but now it won't
install back, giving me the following error message:

"Could not add the requested component. the error is: A
non-recoverable error occured during a database lookup."

any idea of why it happened, and what can be done to fix
that, other than just re-install windows?

I know this is of no help whatsoever, but screwin with
your resgistry is never a good idea. expecially when there
are programs like SpyBot S&D that will clean out addware
for you automatically. Again sorry this is of no help,
but its a good lesson.

Unless of course you made a backup of your registry? Which
is a good idea in this addware/annoying little dweebs and
geeky kids sitting in there parents basements with nothing
better to do than make viruses world we now live in...
 
I know what you're saying, but there was a good reason for
me to go into the registry, but my mistake was, like you
said, that I didn't back up the registry prior to that.
I am still certain that there is a way to get the TCP/IP
to work, just looking for ideas for that way.

You might be able to save yourself a reinstall by :

1. Backup the following registry key:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services

2. Delete the following registry keys in the above key:

DHCP
TCPIP
Winsock
Winsock2

3. Restart the computer and reinstall TCP/IP.

Note: It may be possible to reinstall TCP/IP without restarting.
