When I download SP1 from the MS site and try to insatll it, I get an error
message that says my product code is invalid and to "contact sys admin" (I
have a single machine). My product code has always worked in the past. I did
have to recently (1 months ago) reinstall XP because I crashed my machine.
Any advice?

Contact Microsoft if you have a valid copy with proof. Some legal copies do
get blacklisted.

Try to remember if you have previously installed some 3rd party programs.....
If you have XP-Antispy , remove it.

Also, go to Start - Run and type

regsvr32 licdll.dll <enter>
regsvr32 regwizc.dll <enter>

Also if you have any program that changes the splash screen, or
provides more styles by modifying the system files (especially Styles-XP), uninstall it.
Later on, look for an update from Tgtsoft at http://www.tgtsoft.com/download.asp

Another to watch is ThemeXP from http://www.themexp.org. Uninstall & only use it if fully XP-compliant.

Then close all your open user programs & disable antivirus, then you can proceed to SP1.
