Just cannot do it. Tried everything but nothing works.

Restarting the machine after I've tried to install whatever set of ati's
drivers (latest xp, nt or win 2000) I either get a blank screen or the
monitor switches off, and xp doesn't load.

I've been at it for two weeks and I'm chewing paper. No documentation it
seems on the web or anywhere.

Worked ok-ish in win98se. All that's changed is the os.

sorry to say but the card maybe caput. okish in 98? should have worked great in 98. I have had my 128 in xp. The OS tried to load
WDM native drivers for it. I declined that immediatly and loaded ATI's drivers.

How can the card be kaput if it was working fine in win98 (not 1998) two
weeks ago but not in xp pro now? xp recognizes a vga compatible card every
startup; it just won't let me install it.

I don't remember a choice about xp's native drivers; it just went ahead and
installed microsoft's drivers for the card. I had to uninstall the card in
device manager to install ati's 6.13.3279 drivers (not!)

Ic your first post referred to a black screen not a install problem persay, windows 98 I realize and we are on the same page, what
I meant was that when I used the 128 in XP it worked adequately, however when I bought it I had win 98 and then ME, it was GREAT
back then....

When you uninstalled it after mS drivers loaded were you able to get the adapter back to 'standard VGA'?
when those stupid MS drivers(don't support OpenGL) load they leave ATI drivers in the system folders, these files will interfere
with any subsequent driver update or changes.

You're right. I should upgrade my video card but I am not inclined atm to
shell out £100+ to do so.

No, I couldn't get xp to install the card as standard vga. It's listed in
device manager as '? Other devices: VGA compatible card'. When I try to
use the 'add new hardware' feature it restricts me to half a dozen ati
cards but not the rage 128 pro.

I couldn't uninstall the ms drivers from control panel. It kept saying
that there was no earlier version. So, I uninstalled the card from device
manager, removed all ati .dll and .sys files and any .inf files I could
find, hacked the registry to remove any reference to ati tech. Still, no
luck.

Actually i think that the card is still a viable peice of hardware.

You need to get rid of OTHER DEVICES it will PREVENT you from installing

you need to get 'standard VGA' loaded

safe mode - remove:

all 'other devices'

all ghost drivers for hardware that no longer exsists in every heading

the aiw again from display adapters (if it is there)

all 'ati' from hd...search ATI and delete as many as you see

ati from the INF folder under c:/windows/inf/other INF is a 'hidden folder' set view to view all
files and folders. if you have an 'other' folder under INF then the ATI inf that windows is usuing should
be there. delete all ati from there.

reboot...this should give you the 'standard VGA' adapter now

your ati driver should be an EXE self install run it now

Click Show all hardware in the wizard. Then you'll see (amongst others) the
Standard drivers. Incidentally, it's usual to select Standard PCI VGA
Adapter. Why PCI? Don't know. It's the one that works and permits
installation.

Still no luck I'm afraid.

Managed to remove ati from list of display adapters and I'd already
removed all ati .inf files but still can't get 'standard vga' listed in
the add hardware wizard.

VGA compatible card is the only item listed in Other Devices but if I
remove it in safe or normal mode xp just puts it right back in on
startup.

I can install the drivers in safe mode, and the card is listed in device
manager without a ! or ? but xp then just crashes if I try to boot into
normal mode.

I can see a £100+ leaving my already threadbare wallet pretty soon.

Thanks for your help though.

Sorry, Patrick, still no joy.---

Seems odd that it doesn't work. I had my Rage Fury 128 Pro working in XP Pro
with no problems. Anyway, since I noticed you referred to Pounds Sterling, I
thought I would suggest a very good alternative which I have just upgraded
to from said 128 Pro.

Tyan Tachyon Radeon 9600 Pro available from Ebuyer for about £125 delivered.
Great card with loads of horse power.

I've gone for a Mentor GeForce4 MX440 128Mb DDR AGP (TV-Out) at £47 incl
vat and p&p from R L Supplies and an MSI TV @nywhere Master at about £56
all-in from VGI Computers.

It was time for an upgrade I suppose. Anyone lend me a few bob?
