Can't install Media Player 10 (or 9)

When attempting to download/install, I get this message:

This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version
of Windows. For more information, view the information at the Microsoft web
site.

I am running XP Home Edition 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600

I currently have Media Player version 6.4.09.1130 on my system. Not sure
how this came to be.

Does WMP 10 show up in WindowsUpdate???

I believe WMP 8 was delivered with the original Windows XP version (before
SP1).

A real shot in the dark...

The download is mistakenly interpreting the older currently installed
version of Media Player as the OS, or the message is inaccurate by not
revealing that the incompatibility is really with the oldest version. You
may have to delete the v. 6.4 before downloading the later version or
versions. This DOES have the problem that if something in your real OS is
the culprit, you lose MP altogether until the problem is fixed to allow the
download to complete.

I initially had 8.0 with my XP and upgraded to 9.0 with no problem. Others
hopefully will have more insight on this.
