Hi all,

After getting infected with Antivirus XP 2008, I did a complete reinstall of
XP Pro after a complete wipe of my hard drive on an intel Core 2 6400
@2.13ghz with 3go of ram.

Did all the SP2 updates but got two upgrades that do not want to want to
install :

-IE7 for XP
-Security update KB927779 ( I don't know why, but that one is an issue for
me for many of my pc's, but this post is not about this issue)

To try solving the issue, I then followed all the instructions per Microsoft
bulletin 917925 at

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925

with no avail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

ps on a somewhat related matter, I did post on another news.microsoft.com
forum regarding that Antivirus XP 2008 and had forgoten to remove my Outlook
Express signature ( actually, I did select a "no signature" for this news
site but it keeps on signing anyway). Is there a way to edit a post in
order to be able to remove my email adress that somebody used to spam a
bunch of poeple?

Hi all,

I was getting ready to go to bed and before hand proceeded to shut down the
pc with that issue and when I shut down IE6, I got the following error
message ( liberal translation from french):

"IEXPLORER.EXE Application error
Big red X
The instruction at '0x7e225951' uses the memory adress '0x02603c00'. The
memory cannot be read.
Click on OK to shut down the application
OK"

Most likely it is related to my issue.

The big question is what should I do to get things back in order.

Thanks again for any input,

Cheers

Looks like you've managed to reinfect the machine already, Luc.

Before You Connect a New Computer to the Internet
http://www.cert.org/tech_tips/before_you_plug_in.html

You should have taken care of everything on the above webpage before
otherwise connecting the machine to the internet (e.g., to surf, check/send
email, chat, download other stuff).

Also: I would NOT connect any USB keys (AKA flash drives) to your machine
either unless they've been formatted and Autorun has been disabled! This
could be how the machine got reinfected.

Related:

=> If the machine's running WinXP SP1 after the clean install, you can skip
SP2 and all post-SP2 updates and install SP3 manually, then go to Windows
Update and install any critical security updates offered; when you do,
you'll probably need to see...

=> Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new
Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

=> I would NOT install IE7 via Windows Update or until you've got the
machine properly functioning.

=> A Repair Install will NOT fix your problems.

Thanks PA Bear,

I read the suggested document (cert), it's cert_ainly interesting ( why not
an easy pun at this point as I need to unwind from this hellish
experience!!!)

A few points/questions before I reinstall once more that pc and follow the
suggestions you were kind enough to pass on to me :

1- I got reinfected through my network...how do I disable a network ( in
this case a home network) on the other pc's that are already part of that
network( I know how to create it but I find no command within XP to
cancel/delete such a network);
2- I've got an Ipod, could it be infected and if so how do I clean it
without loosing data;
3- Same for Palm 650;
4- I'll reinstall XP on the other pc's part of that network ( after erasing
and partitionning them) and then I had planned to reestablish a home
network. As my kids use one of those pc's and I cannot control their
internet/chat/etc. behavior, is there a way to avoid contamination of my two
"adult" pc's if they reinfect their pc other than not including them in the
network ( i.e. I find it convenient to have them part of the loop as I
manage their digital pictures)?

5- Can I edit one of my former posts on this news.microsoft.com site?

Thanks once more to offer me your time and experience to get through this
complex issue,

Cheers

Hi All,

I found the answer to questions 1 mentionned in my previous post. That was
my first task as I'm certain that is how I got reinfected. So I turned off
file and printer sharing on all my pc's. I'm still looking for answers to
questions 2, 3, 4 that I listed on my previous post.

I wiped out the drive and reinstalled XP once more. I then proceeded as PA
Bear suggested to SP3 and then installed Kaspersky as per "cert"'s
recommendations ( which I am following throughouly ).

I've got a few more questions:

5 - How do I disable autorun, is it in the bios?

6- I've got a lot of software/hardware to install i.e. printers, label
makers, Itune, Palm, etc, etc, etc ( that is what I hate of this situation,
all that work for nothing as that PC had been up and running for ages until
that pest of Antivirus XP 2008 crept on me). What is the safest way to find
and install these softwares/drivers? Is it to a) "plug and play" them (
i.e. have Windows look for the proper driver) or b) dowload the
driver/software on another pc and then install from that cd in order to
avoid getting caught again by malware while browsing for these drivers?
What is the best way as I'm now fearful than ever ( in my opinion, that is
what is the worst effect of malware, it will turn people away from
computers/internet as it is becoming like a big pond infested by piranhas)?

Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions,

Cheers
