Can't install IE ver. 6.0

A visit to a website crashed my IE 6.0, and all I got then was an error
message. I am running XP, but I got confused by my experience with Win95.
I went to Add/Remove Programs, and "thought" I was "reparing" IE, but
actually ended up uninstalling it. So I went to the MS website and
downloaded it again, but it still wouldn't run, and still gave me the
popup error screen. I checked the folder in Program Files and couldn't
find any files over 1Mb in size except in a backup file in a backup
folder. Thinking that was confusing a fresh reinstall I deleted all of
those files I could, and tried again. Actually I have tried 3 times, and
each time when it get to the installation phase it puts up the message:
"Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed
on this system. Setup cannot continue."

I suspect the answer is somewhere in the registry. Maybe physically
change the version number somewhere. Can anybody help me. By the way,
Outlook Express works great.

Ted,
I got exactly the same problem. If you find a way to fix
it, please e-mail me. It will be much appriciated. Thanks

I just looked on previous pages on this group, currently
page 3, dated 31/1/ 2:47pm reply from Ramesh (MVP), his
solution - to do with disabling thirsd part's extentions -
work very well. So simple and could prevent SO MUCH
FRUSTRATIONS!!!!

Failed Again. I changed "IsInstalled from 1 to 0 for the browser only.
Then I downloaded (again!!) and tried to reinstall. This time it gave me
an error message indicating it would NOT finish the instalation because
the softward (latest from MS with SP1) was not digitally signed. Here is
part of the message.

"Microsoft strongly recommends you only use device drivers with the
Designed for Microsoft Windows XP logo. Installing device drivers that
have not been digitally-signed by Microsoft may disable the system, allow
viruses onto your computer, or otherwise impair the correct operation of
your computer either immediately or in the future. "

Now in c:\program files\internet explorer\backup data\ i have 2 backup
files of about 15.6Mb, ie5bak.dat, and ie5old.dat This is obviously
where my downloads go.

PLEASE, I need more help. Thanks

Hi Ramesh,

Regarding: Installing IE6, & getting the Windows Logo Testing Error

Your first suggestion regarding the 823559 security patch sounded
promising, but it is no longer listed in the "Add/Remove Programs". The
installation history says it was installed 7/16/03, but it along with
numerous others that used to be there are now gone. I tried to download
and install it again just so I could uninstall it - but that didn't work.
That patch along with the others that are missing from "Add/Remove
Programs" used to be in the windows folder, but they are missing there as
well. (QUESTION - What does Microsoft recommend for uninstalling patches
or programs you can no longer see?)

So then I printed off Article 822798 which suggest 8 possible fixes
(including the Catroot2). I tried methods 1 to 5, but had no luck.
Method 6 doesn't apply to WinXP, and 7 & 8 (having to do with
certificates) are lengthy and complicated.

***QUESTION - Would it work to "Stop" Cryptographic Services temporarily
(My Computer/Manage/Services), install IE6, and then restart the service??

Do you have any other suggestions?? I hate being dependent on Netscape.

Thanks - Ted Smith

Ted,

Renaming the Catroot2 works for most users. Next option which I can think of is a Repair install. But, you'll lose all the windows updates installed and need to download them again.

Hi Ramesh,

That explains why I lost the updates. I did do an over the top Windows
reinstall. But then, when I told auto-update to look for needed updates
it only found one and installed just that one. And, like I said, it
