Can't install Defender

I'm a long time user of MS AntiSpyware and it works fine. Tried to upgrade
to the new Defender version. I get a message back telling me my processor is
incompatable and to contact my vendor. I'm running an HP Pavilion A530N with
an AMD Athlon 64. I feel like I'm being left out. No way could I get to HP
on this one. They're not very consumer friendly. I suppose now I'm going to
lose my MS AntiSpyware program when they do away with it. Has anybody else
had the same error message at the beginning of installation?

And what would the x32 version be??? Is there a certain place I have to look
for it? I might have used the wrong word and it should have been unsupported
instead of incompatible. Means the same thing I guess. I've searched to see
if anybody else had the same problem, but can't find a mention of it
anywhere. I hate to think I'm unique in this. I'll look for the x32. I
just downloaded the program I tried installing last night. Will try again.
Thanks

Wayne :-)

Hi Wayne

I think the point Engel is making is have you downloaded the correct file?
The default file offered from the Windows Defender download site is:

WindowsDefender.msi which is for a 32 bit system.

For a 64 bit system you will need WindowsDefenderX64.msi which, once you
have completed validation, is linked under the Overview section of the
download page.

Confusing thread: What's the name of the downloaded file?

You should be installing WindowsDefender.MSI

Not-WindowsDefenderx64.MSI

You have a 64 bit processor, but you are running 32-bit Windows XP on it (as
are a great many folks with 64 bit processors including my wife)--so you
need the 32-bit version of the program.

Now I'm more confused than ever. I can only find one program to download and
that's where I got it. They're not labeled any way as to X32 or X64. Just
Defender. Have no idea what I had, it's not identified in any way. I'm
starting to think all of this is just a waste of time. Thanks to all who
answered.

Wayne--The download site and the way the program is packaged has changed
since it was first introduced about 3 weeks ago. Originally, there were two
separate downloads--one for 32-bit OS's and one (WindowsDefenderX64.MSI) for
64-bit.

This caused some confusion because some folks didn't know which was correct
for their machine.

At some point, perhaps around February 22nd, the download changed, and only
a single file was offered.

So--it'd be nice to get to the bottom of this, if possible--I'm not sure if
what you are seeing is the result of a corrupted or incomplete download, or
some kind of malfunction of the code that determines whether you are
installing the 32-bit or 64-bit code.

I think my best advice to you would be re-download and try it
again --compare the two downloaded files for size, and see whether the new
one works better.

OK--Have now been corrected by other posts.

There are still two separate downloads one for 64 bit OS versions, and one
for the 32 bit versions 99% of us are using. Just hit the large Download
button to get the 32 bit version.

So--Wayne--I believe you are downloading the correct version, and that the
download is either incomplete or corrupted--retrying is the best advice I
can give.
