When I try to "insert" a "sound from file" I get the
message "PowerPoint couldn't insert a sound from the
selected file."

I can "insert" a "movie from file" with no problem, just
not a song.

I'm on Windows 98SE and Office 2000 SP-3

Thanks,
Danny

Apparently, Windows Media 9 does something strang to music
it converts from CD to .wma or .mp3 and, in Windows 98, it
cannot be picked up in PowerPoint or played
via "mplayer.exe" (run from "RUN" on the START button). I
read in an earlier post (that pointed to the excellent
tutorial found at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia
..htm) that using the "mplayer.exe" was the way to test a
song/sound file for compatability with PowerPoint. WMA &
MP3 Files created by Windows Media 9 would not play on
the "mplayer"!

However, files created using ROXIO 5 did! That is my
fix. I'm now using ROXIO (soundstream option) to convert
my CD's to MP3's and WMA's and they can be imported into
PowerPoint --- no problem!

PS... Ain't it odd that Microsoft products create files
that are NOT compatible with Microsoft products???

It could be that since you ripped the tracks from CD that you have
Distribution Rights Management turned on in WMP 9.
