Can't increase monitor resolution after XP reinstallation

Hi, I just reinstalled XP Home (2002) onto my Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop
yesterday, and for some reason this decreased the monitor resolution to
640x480 pixels (huge icons), and it will not let me adjust this under
"Display Properties" > Settings. I've been onto the Microsoft Support and
trouble shooting page, but their suggestions aren't working (e.g. under
Display Properties > Settings tab > Advanced > Monitor tab, the "Properties"
button is grayed out; and under Adapter tab > Properties > Driver tab there
is no "Update Driver" button, just "VgaSave" information). I've tried to run
the "Drivers and Utilities" CD from Dell, with no luck. To make things more
frustrating, I've tried to get online to get all of the pertinent updates
from Microsoft, but my DSL provider (Verizon) requires a higher screen
resolution to set the DSL up!

Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

You have to do more than simply install Dell's Resource CD. You then
have to run the software it installs, and then follow its instructions
for reinstalling all of the necessary device drivers, usually starting
with the motherboard's chipset.

When you ran the Drivers and Utilities disc, did you also install the
video driver. I`ve re-installed windows xp,and I
had to do that. Hope this helps, I too have a Dell Inspiron.

Yes, you both were right and it worked! I had just assumed that XP would
automatically run the Dell Drivers CD, but it didn't, and I just installed
things from the CD manually. That's something you only have to learn once!
Thanks again guys!
