Cant Import VOB BUP Files

I have vob and bup video files that I can't import in moviemaker. They show
up when I click on 'all files' but won't work with video import.
First of all, are these the type of files that can be used for video
editing? I don't want to convert them into another form until I know they are
video files. (I ripped them from a dvd but not sure what's what)
Do I need to convert them into another form? Thanks
