can't import video

using Win Movie Maker 5.1.......well, trying to. I have tried to import
videos (they are already on hard-drive. I click on 'import' find a clip
(mpeg). Keep getting error that cannot import because codec required to view
is not installed. I have tried to troubleshoot and under options I DO have
the box checked which directs it to automatically download codecs. Really
want to try to use this s/w but I am stuck here. Thanks!
