I recently needed to format the partition on my hard disc where my PST
outlook file was stored. I copied the old pst to another partition and
checked size against the orgininal. On reinstalling outlook I have only been
able to import some of my old date and none of my old mail items, they just
dont seem to me available. Can anyone tell me what might have gone wrong. I
have tried on another computer and got a unicode error messaege whetever
that is.

I would apprieciate any assistance.

Thanks

Stephen

Nearly every post on this forum says "do NOT IMPORT".
Go to File-Open-Outlook Data File in Outlook and open it that way.
Why not import?

Here's why. Importing PST's will lose:
1. Custom Forms
2. Custom Views
3. Connections between contacts and activities
4. Received dates on mail
5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar
6. Journal connections
7. Distribution Lists

Opening a PST file will preserve all of these. That is why we do not advise
people to import a native file into Outlook.

Thank you for such a prompt response.

Unfortuntely I tried opening the file in the way you suggest first with the
same results. I guess the PST file is corrupt>?

Thanks again

Stephen

Could be - have you a) run SCANPST against it and b) still got access to the
original file? Did you make a copy with Outlook still open?

Gordon

I don't know anything about scan pst where is it please? Yes its just
possible outlook was unitentionaly open at the time I made a copy. I
didcoved some very nasy spyware and wanted to give the hard drive a good
spring clean anyway.

Thanks

The default location is C:\Program Files\Mocrosoft Office\Officexx (where xx
is the number of your Office version). Just double-click on it to launch.

Thanks again Gordon.

Thats a very useful tool and implies exactly what I would have expected. 50
folders and about 5000 items. nothing like that appears when I do in
outlook, File/open data file. for instance none of my old emails appear. In
fact no inbox is imported. If I attempt a import rather than open data file
the mail items dont seem to be there either, but scan pst implies they are.
can I say I am a bit of a outlook novice at this point but have opened all
available trees in the left hand folders pane. Mystified.

Cheers

That would imply that you are trying to open/import the wrong pst file!
Check the file size AND the location very carefully before trying to open.
