I have purchased a few songs from differant websites and have been unable to
import them to Movie Maker 2, am getting this error "protected using digital
rights management and cannot be imported." Then I burned the song to a CD,
copied it back to my computer then tried to import that file and got this
error "Track01.cda is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported
into Windows Movie Maker"
Does anyone know how I might be able to use downloaded music files in Movie
Maker? What good is it to download music if yuo can't use it the same as if
you bought a CD?
Thanks, Val

Welcome to Digital Rights Management. Remember, the rights they protect,
aren't yours! DRM is all about taking away your fair rights.

The main reason DRM'ed music is so popular is that most people haven't
realized what they give up. They just automatically assume they can do what
they want. It wont be too much longer until people start getting new
computers or new players, etc. and start having problems.

That's because 'cda' isn't really a file. It's just what Windows uses to
indicate to you that an audio file is there.

You'll need to 'rip' the audio track off the cd. iTunes, WMP, and many
other programs can do that too. Just like you would with a regular audio
cd.

You can do it in WAV, or in a high quality lossy format (aac/mp4 or WMA, or
mp3.) Just make sure that you've disabled any DRM that your ripper might
want to use. (WMP encourages you to do that.)

Remember, if this is music for listening to (probably not, since you are
putting it into a movie), any conversion of audio format will cause loss of
quality and clarity.

It's also not as good quality, either. Comparing the sound from a cd (or
audio dvd) to a compressed audio file shows that what's being sold is
actually pretty bad quality. They get away with it because most people are
used to lousy 128k mp3's from p2p programs.

AAC/mp4 isn't too bad. The best (in iTunes) is actually slightly better
than the best mp3 at 128k.

WMA is terrible. Worse than mp3, actually. (That's why they sell wma at
192k, because that's the only way to get quality comparable to mp3 at 128k.)
