Can't import avi video file! Need help!

I captured video on my old computer using Pinnacle software. I then saved my
video files to a portable hard drive and am trying to import them into Movie
Maker. I keep getting the message "Windows Movie Maker has encountered a
problem and need to close. . ." I tried reading other posts, but I'm still
not sure what to do. Help!

Does Windows Movie Maker work with your
other projects/files? If not, you may have some
issues that need to be addressed first...

Anyway...

Maybe you have a codec issue..the following
free utility will identify the codec you need:

Yes, I was able to import photos and music. I'm pretty new at this, so I
have to ask a dumb question. What is a codec?

If your other files work but the .avi in question
does not...try the steps I previously posted.
