Can't hear (tone) notification of new e-mail

I no longer hear a tone when I receive a new e-mail message. I used to. I already tried the "Help Clip - it guy" He said to go into tools, advanced options, sound notification, (apply) etc... I not only re-selected these but also removed and re-selected again....but nothing... have also checked... my sound it is up and has not been muted...Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone know what else I can do?
