Can't give access to my PC

I have a three-PC home network, one with Windows XP, one with Windows 2000 professional, and the third with Windows 98. The single printer is attached to the 2000 machine. I have given share access to my printer for all users, yet, the one on XP must type a password in order to print, and the one on 98 can't even get access to the PC at all, much less the printer.

I'm nowhere near an expert on 2000 pro, but have checked everywhere I know to check, and everything I've found so far gives access to everything to all users. Dangerous, I know, since I have no firewall software, but it's a home network with nothing real important on the system...no credit card or SSN numbers anywhere on the three PC's.

How do I go about troubleshooting the system so I can give access to the 98 and keep the XP from having to type a password just to print to the printer (short of moving the printer to another PC)?

Please respond to my email address at (e-mail address removed)

Thanks,

Michael Rhodes

are all the computers on the same workgroup?
If yes then make sure that the account you're using on the XP also exists on
the win2k machine with the same password.

That should fix the password problem.

Also make sure they're all on the same subnet. If they're not then they
won't connect without a router or extra nic card.

Windows XP and Windows 2000 are secure systems. They both
require that you have a user account and password on the
machine where the shared resources are located to access
them across the network. Does that statment make sense?
So you have to login with a password on the Windows XP
machine in order to access shares that are located on the
Windows 2000 box. That same login and password needs
exist as a user account on the box you are trying to
access. Shares on a windows 98 box do not require a user
name and password by default.
