Just spent some time here going through the archives and I can't find
the answer .I just brought a 250gb western sata harddrive and an
external case for back/mirror puposes. My computer is a HP Pavillion
8000 Laptop, 2 months old.My machine will not see the external HD,it's
new and unformated,it sees a usb mass storage device, but no drive
letter so I can't format the drive. The same usb port will see a flash
drive so I know the port is working.I'm thinking of trying my work
machine, win 2000 and seeing if I can format there and then try the XP
again.any suggestions will be much appreciated

Steve:
The reason no drive letter has been assigned to your (presumably) USB
external HD (I'm assuming your external enclosure is a USB device) is
*because* it has not been partitioned/formatted. You must do this *before* a
drive letter will be assigned to the drive. You undertake the
partitioning/formatting process in XP's Disk Management utility. If you've
never used that utility before, access the Help and Support files for
information on using Disk Management.
