Hi.
XP Fax used to work. Then suddenly it stopped.I tried everything suggested
in the threads. No luck. But now, when I run services.msc the fax status is
'stopping' and it stays so forever. When it finally clears I get the error
message 'this device is set for deletion'...Once, during the many tries, the
fax service started but then stopped with error message ' the device started
but was stopped.' How weird can that be?
Fact: I cannot get the fax to work again
Thanks for your help.

Hi, I had the same issue. It seems to be a proble wit your modem driver.
during install, fax needs a valid modem, else it can't install. This is what
I trie successfully:

I uninstalled the modem drivers through device manager, physically removed my
modem PCI card, started the machine, shut it down, reinstalled the PCI card,
powered up the PC, Windows found the new hardware, reinstalled the driver and
then I installed the fax component through add/ remove programs and
add/remove windows components. Now Windows XP fax is up and running.
It seems that the fax component only installs correctly, when Windows
recognizes the correct modem. Although my modem is in the HCL list, Windows
failed to recognize my modem correctly. Reinstalling the driver seem to have
solved the problem.

Good luck!

Thanks John for your input. I tried that before posting my query and it still
did not work. I am now trying a possible solution Russ sent me. We'll see.
Thanks a lot.
